My Journal

Here you will find information about some locations I have been to, and my feelings about the location.

Bird Island
Bird Island is only accessable by boat and it is off shore in the Kiawah Island (just south of Charleston) area. The central portions of the island are sorta cordoned off by signs and tape, requesting that you do not enter (there is no need to, as there are birds EVERYWHERE). The abundance of bird life here is amazing; many varieties of Herons, Pelicans by the thousands, many varieties of Gulls, and Skimmers. I'm sure you will find just about any shore bird that is present in the low country on this island. The only sign of 'man' are the signs and tape - very unspoiled.... If you get a chance to visit during the mating and nesting season, you will not be disappointed. On the negative side - the 'aroma' can sometimes be quite odiferous . <G>

Pinckney Island NWF
I have found Pinckney Island to be very good in the spring and fall. All waders and birds are quite close to the walkway during high tide. Since there is a fair amount of foot and bicycle traffic, so the wildlife does not spook quickly. After parking follow the trail to the first marsh on the right. There is a signpost there that you can sit in front of, and use as a backrest. If you remain fairly calm, the birds will venture quite close. One caution - sometimes the fire ants nest near the post....Found that out the 'hard' way..... On the other side of there is another marsh area with a large group of driftwood at the far end where a variety of birds collect.

A little further, about .5 miles, there is a pond on the right that houses many varieties of ducks and waders, along with a gator or two. There is quite a bit of cover in some areas for the birds, so clear shots can be difficult. You can walk completely around this entire pond.

Further down, about another .5 miles, another pond. Herons and Egrets frequent this pond, and are easily spooked. Bring something comfortable to sit on along with some camo-cloth to hide behind, and eventually they will migrate back into that area.

I have gone further into the island, but have not yet found locations that are as productive as those first couple of spots. If you venture further in, and find a place that you like, please let me know.
